Arts Week 2024

Just before half term Hazelbeck students across all key stages took part in the 13th edition of our Arts week. This year's Theme centred on Light & Movement and saw students engaged in activities which introduced them to shadow and light workshops throughout school.

We had the pleasure of watching a fantastic light puppet show delivered by Lisa Difford, the artistic Director of Fettle and Fable. Lisa is an award-winning theatre maker, actor and storyteller with a true passion for enabling young people from all settings to explore the world around them in an accessible and meaningful way.  Lisa delivered her storytelling show via a small velvet suitcase equipped with lights and movable characters. She presented her show in every class and gave the students a chance to ask questions and re-watch the show to better understand her skilful presentation.

Lisa also delivered a workshop for our students to explore a variety of light activities through different media, the students were fascinated by how much could be done with different textures and the application of light and movement.

Caroline Thompson delivered one further workshop in which students from different classes created lanterns with simple paper and rigid sticks. They looked impressive especially when lit up with the little lights inside.

The week culminated in the usual way, with a fabulous pop-up exhibit of all the different interpretations of the theme. It was a truly amazing display of artistic pieces, tailored to our students’ individual needs with lots of pockets of independent tasks to support the development of our more able groups and fantastic sensory resources to engage and motivate our sensory students.

Thank you first and foremost to all our fantastic members of staff and their ability to unlock our students’ artistic potential, and their unrelenting desire to reach every single pupil here at Hazelbeck. Thank you to our artists Lisa Difford and Caroline Thompson for sharing their knowledge and creativity and bringing our Arts week to life. Last but not least, thank you to our amazing students who approach new activities with a sense of ‘ Awe and wonder’. Well done all!
