Beckfoot Trust is an organisation that links a group of local Bradford schools together so that they can collectively improve the life chances for young people within their schools. Our aim is to create a group of truly remarkable schools each with a genuine comprehensive intake. They will be wonderful places for young people to learn and grow up in. We want to make a difference. We want to create something special.

Beckfoot Bites Back with Rethink Food  - Saving the taste from going to waste

Pupils at Beckfoot Nessfield, Heaton, Allerton, Priestthorpe, Phoenix and Hazelbeck schools across our Trust have set up their own social enterprise to tackle climate change and in doing so reduce the amount of food that goes to waste.

In partnership with Rethink Food, a community interest company based in Leeds, the pupils created Beckfoot Bites and will now use this enterprise as a vehicle to help solve both environmental and social issues. This work will redistribute approximately 1 tonne of surplus food each week across the communities of the six primary schools. The outcomes of this work will make nutritionally valued food available to the pupils and their families and at the same time help to save the planet by offsetting 2390kg of Co2 every week.

I am thrilled that six of our schools are launching this initiative to prevent waste food going to landfill, reduce carbon emissions and help provide food for our families. This work forms an important element of Beckfoot Trust Environmental Strategy as well as supporting our curriculum intentions for our learners to be committed community contributors and future ready. Following the 'Leaders Summit on Climate' and in the build up to the COP26 summit in Glasgow, later this year, it is very clear that we all need to our upmost to rise to the challenge of leading more sustainable lives '

Alongside the market stall enterprises, Rethink Food will be running a series of educational food-based sessions with the pupils which will include growing their own fresh produce using an aeroponic growing tower. The lessons are underpinned by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and will empower children to make informed choices around food and sustainability.

Kevin Mackay, co-founder of Rethink Food and former primary school teacher said, “The pupils at the Beckfoot Trust have been inspirational to work with. They have shown that through positive action even in these uncertain times we can make a huge difference to people’s lives and at the same time protect our planet.”

Beckfoot Bites was developed by a number of pupils across our special and primary schools and will now be launched wider as every pupil will be taking part in setting the aims and outcomes for this incredible social enterprise.
